About This Collection
The collection falls into four groups, and most designs come in more than one colour.
Sun & Tulips. A sun, a few tulips and a lot of flat colour. The Cream Matisse Sun & Tulips Print, the Green Matisse Sun & Tulips Print and the Blue Matisse Sun & Tulips Print are joined by pink and grey versions, so it's easy to match one to an existing scheme.
Botanical and floral cut-outs. These are the pared-back Matisse flower prints and leaf designs, in blue, beige, grey, pink and sage. The Sage Green Matisse Botanical Print is the one to look at if you want a green Matisse print that works with natural wood, while the Pink Matisse Floral Print and the Blue Matisse Botanical Print are brighter.
Matisse-style animals. The Floral Whippet Print is the best seller here by a clear margin, a whippet set among cut-out flowers with the composure of a dog who knows he looks good. The Colourful Cat Floral Print, the Border Collie Matisse Print and the Ducks 'Quack & Bloom' print follow the same idea, and the dog prints collection has more breeds in other styles.
Colourful botanicals. The Shells & Flora Botanical Abstract Print, the Casa Botanica and Limon Botanica prints and the Red Coral Botanical Print take the cut-out idea into busier, warmer compositions. For more in this vein, the floral prints and botanical prints collections are the natural next step.
What rooms suit Matisse wall art?
Living rooms suit the Sun & Tulips prints at A2 or A1, where the flat colour has room to work.
Bedrooms suit the softer beige, cream and sage botanicals, which are calm enough to sit above a bed.
Kitchens and bathrooms can take the brighter pink and blue Matisse floral prints, which cheer up a small wall without much effort.
For gallery walls, Matisse prints sit comfortably next to abstract art prints, since both rely on shape and colour rather than detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Matisse botanical prints?
Matisse botanical prints are inspired by the cut-outs Henri Matisse made in the last years of his life, when he cut shapes from painted paper and arranged them into leaves, seaweed-like fronds and flowers. The style is flat, rhythmic and colourful, and it translates well to modern interiors because it's decorative without being fussy.
Are these original Matisse artworks?
No. Every print here is a new design inspired by Matisse's cut-out style, not a reproduction of one of his works. That's why the same design can come in several colourways, and why a whippet or a border collie can turn up in the middle of it.
Do Matisse prints work as a set?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest collections to pair up. Choose two or three designs in the same colourway, or one design in complementary colours, and they'll look like they were made together. Buy 2, save 10%; buy 3, save 15% is applied automatically at checkout.
What sizes are available?
Most prints are available in sizes from 5x7 up to A1, with both metric and US paper sizes. Full size options are shown on each individual product page. For a pair either side of a bed or sofa, A3 or A2 keeps the shapes bold without overwhelming the wall.
Can all prints be ordered framed?
Yes. All prints can be ordered framed. We're rolling framed options out across the site, so individual listings will show whether a framed version is currently available. If you'd like a framed version of a print that doesn't yet have that option listed, get in touch and we'll sort it for you.
What is the print quality like?
Prints are produced on FSC-certified 200gsm fine art paper using a 12-colour press with a matte, glare-free finish. Flat blocks of sage, pink and blue need even, accurate colour, and the matte finish keeps them soft rather than shiny.
